Technology package PLANT DERIVED PESTICIDE TECHNOLOGY PACKAGE
Summary The yield and quality of Brassicas and other green leafy vegetables are often greatly reduced by insect pests. Research carried out at LAES since 1993 in partnership with the German Development Service (GDS) has resulted in the development and release of plant derived pesticides (PDP). Plant derived pesticides are compounds that are obtained from plants that can be used to control pests on crops.

Plant derived pesticides Low cost, effective and natural products PDPs being recommended are from the roots of the derris plant which is found locally in the forest and can be grown in the village or garden, the fruit of the chilli plant which also can be grown in the garden and the seeds of the neem tree which is originally from India and can be grown in the village Pesticides obtained from derris, chilli and neem can give similar control of pests as the commercially available insecticides Trials at LAES have demonstrated the effectiveness of the plant derived pesticides An example of this is where the percentage of cabbage heads damaged by insect pests was reduced from 40% to around 5% by using PDPs.
