	Madang short	“Madang short” variety was found to perform the best with yields of 3.2 – 4.8 tonnes dry roots per hectare over a 5 year growing period Analysis of the kava lactone content shows it is comparable to varieties being produced and exported from other Pacific Island countries. Selected from field trials at LAES Keravat from 1989 – 1992 Alternative cash crop suitable for the wet lowland areas of the Islands Region and other parts of the country Research shows kava is a viable crop and has the potential to become an important export for PNG
